Chronicle

Owing to widespread and growing inquiry into the subject of mental and spiritual healing, it is important that the bases of such healing be understood. This observation is occasioned by statements in an article captioned "Tomorrow's Doctor," which appeared in your columns recently.

The article implies that an awakened faith in the patient is the "unquestioned strength, the curative force," that brings about the recovery in "all systems of mental healing, of which Christian Science is perhaps the most conspicuous." But faith alone is not the "curative force" in Christian Science, in which it is understood that Mind, God, is the healing Principle.

True, Christian Science is a spiritual ministration; it is spiritually mental, the human so-called mind being excluded as a curative factor. In Christian Science distinction is made between purely spiritual healing and the curative efforts of suggestive therapeutics, such as psychology, hypnotism, and like methods, which utilize the human mind as a factor. Also, Christian Science practice is based on an understanding and utilization of divine law.
