One Tuesday afternoon I discovered a boil on my lip,...
One Tuesday afternoon I discovered a boil on my lip, which later developed into three boils. I asked my mother to help me in Christian Science, and she did so very willingly; but as I understood that she could not do all of the work I began to read the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly, putting more thought than ever into it. She gave me a reference to read on page 8 of "Miscellaneous Writings," where Mrs. Eddy says, "Simply count your enemy to be that which defiles, defaces, and dethrones the Christ-image that you should reflect." I said to mother, "Wouldn't I look funny defaced?" She answered, "Look up 'deface' in the dictionary." I was obedient and immediately consulted a dictionary and found it defined thus: "To destroy or mar the face or external appearance of; to disfigure; to injure, spoil, or mar, by effacing or obliterating important features or portions of." I knew at once I was the image of God and could not be defaced. I worked for four days, but I was too vain, and there was no change at all. I stayed away from school the rest of the week.
Saturday night same. I decided to do what I thought was right. Error murmured, Tomorrow is Sunday and you cannot go to Sunday school looking like that. But I immediately denied the error and listened for God's voice. I heard, Take your stand and you shall be rewarded. When I reached home from Sunday school my lip felt much better, and I found that it was almost normal. That afternoon I said that I believed I would go to school the next day, so I began to study my school lessons. When I awakened the next morning my lip was almost as bad as it was at first; but I took my stand again, and when I arrived at school the condition was entirely healed.
I am very grateful for Christian Science and for Mary Baker Eddy; also for her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and all the other Christian Science literature. I am also grateful for the opportunity of being brought up in Christian Science and of attending the Christian Science Sunday School. I still have a little over four years to enjoy this blessed privilege.
