Bath Chronicle and Herald

As it will hardly be possible to give a detailed reply to each of the letters on Christian Science in your recent issues, I propose to sum up the position as follows:

Christian Scientists are convinced that when their religion is properly understood it will be found to be unassailable from any point of view. For instance, from the point of view of Christianity its position is impregnable; for Christian Science exists for the purpose of bringing back the whole of Christianity, including its lost element of healing. Christian Scientists are engaged in humbly trying to follow the Master's command to "heal the sick," not only to "preach the gospel" but to preach it "with signs following." Christians who are unwilling or unable to offer these proofs of the efficacy of their religion are hardly in the position to criticize Christian Science.

From the metaphysical point of view, Christian Science is equally impregnable through the very simplicity of its logic, in which every conclusion is logically and fearlessly drawn from the premise of one infinite God, good. But genuine Christian Scientists do not wish to force, in any degree, their views on others who may have no leanings towards a pure idealism, which may appear to many to be in advance of the times.
