For twenty years Christian Science has been the biggest blessing in my life. The first healing experienced was during an epidemic of smallpox, of which both my sister and I had light cases. A physician diagnosed the disease and a health officer was notified. Every member of the family had begun the study of Christian Science a short time before, and we were happy to find this religion readily applicabel to healing. We both recovered in a few days, and in my case not one day was spent in bed; no scars were left on either of us.
During the war I enlisted and was subjected to inoculations. Within half an hour I was taken violently ill and became unconscious. I awakened in the hospital with physicians and surgeons trying to keep me from passing on. Christian Science had taught me that "God alone is man's life" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 203), and this truth I declared audibly each moment I was roused to consciousness. The next morning I awakened perfectly well, much to the mystery of the surgeons, who had not expected me to live through the night. Christian Science treatment had been asked for, but the message was not delivered until after the healing had come. I was grateful to experience the help coming direct from God. Throughout my experience in the army my study of Christian Science was to me a moral support and spiritual strength. I was in the aviation branch, and one of my first days of flying alone required continual low flying over a spot at which a friend had met with a fatal accident that same morning. These comforting words quieted my fears while flying:
