"Light is everywhere"

[Original article in German]

While riding into town one day on a street car a mother with her little child sat opposite the writer. It was already dusk, and one after another the lights in the streets shone out. The child's eyes were radiant, and at the sight of each new light it gleefully said, haltingly, "Light." It could hardly talk as yet, but it regarded the presence of light as being something wonderful, and untiringly the little lips formed the words, "There—light, light!" Lovingly bending towards the child the mother said, "Yes, light is everywhere." These words filled the writer with inexpressible joy; for their spiritual signification, as revealed to her through Christian Science, became suddenly clear.

How often mental darkness, sorrow, and pain seem real to us! Believing that light is absent, we close our eyes in order not to look upon surroundings bitterly disappointing. Instead, we should open our eyes and joyously and gratefully welcome even the smallest light appearing in every human life. Even though we may not always see it immediately, we should always know that "light is everywhere": for, as stated by Mrs. Eddy on page 504 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "there is no place where God's light is not seen, since Truth, Life, and Love fill immensity and are ever-present."

What a privilege for Christian Scientists to go where darkness, sorrow, and pain seem to be, and there by reflection let the divine light shine, so as to prove that "light is everywhere"! Jesus said to his disciples: "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Mrs. Eddy also clearly points out that this must be the Christian Scientist's attitude, when she says on page 367 of Science and Health, "Let us watch, work, and pray that this ... light be not hid, but radiate and glow into noontide glory."
