Several years ago, when I visited a Christian Science...

Several years ago, when I visited a Christian Science practitioner for relief from anxiety, depression, and insomnia, his treatment resulted in a freer frame of mind, and for the first time in many weeks I spent a peaceful night and slept. The next morning I felt like a different person.

Through the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I borrowed from a Christian Science Reading Room, many questions that had puzzled me for a long time were satisfactorily answered. Having been reared in the orthodox Jewish faith, any allusions to "Christ" and "Jesus" at that time did not readily find favor with me. However, upon reading on page 333 of the textbook, "Jesus was a human name, which belonged to him in common with other Hebrew boys and men, for it is identical with the name Joshua, the renowned Hebrew leader. On the other hand, Christ is not a name so much as the divine title of Jesus," my misconception of Christianity and my prejudice toward Jesus were overcome. It was further revealed to me that Jesus was not God, but an inspired teacher who came to show mortals the way out of their difficulties; and on different occasions, when it seemed beyond my ability to prove some of the truths that are stated in Science and Health, I was benefited by remembering how Jesus had successfully availed himself of these truths. I could not help but feel grateful for the inspiring, practical example that he had left mankind.

Due to a rupture, for many years I wore a truss which was recommended by the physical director of a local branch of the Y. M. C. A., who, upon examining me at the time of my applying for admittance into their athletic department, discovered this condition. Later, I visited a surgeon in this city, who advised an operation, which I was reluctant to undergo. My prayer for help, guidance, and cure was answered by the following impressive words, which I found on page 243 of Science and Health: "The clay cannot reply to the potter. The head, heart, lungs, and limbs do not inform us that they are dizzy, diseased, consumptive, or lame. If this information is conveyed, mortal mind conveys it." How clear it was that the body as flesh and bones had no intelligence to tell me that I was dominated by a repture! I reasoned with myself that this was a condition of thought rather than of body, and that it was inconsistent to wear a truss to heal thought. At that moment I became aware that God is good; that He is the only creator, incapable of causing disease, suffering, or pain. I was instantly healed.
