Moral Awakening

It is a mistake to think that Christian Science practice is confined to the healing of disease. The fact is, it aims at the complete regeneration of the individual. Everyone will agree that health is valuable, and very necessary for the carrying on of the various activities of everyday life, but it must be admitted that sound morals are equally so. The word "healthy" as applied to sinner we almost shudder to hear. Indeed, when we analyze the term in the light of divine Science, it is seen to be a misnomer; for surely a sinner cannot possibly be reckoned healthy, in the true sense of the word.

Christian Scientists are engaged in the practice of healing in the fullest meaning of the word. Not a single phase of moral obliquity, not a single form of disease, not a single aspect of human suffering, but is embraced in its practice. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 18 of "No and Yes," "Right thinking and right acting, physical and moral harmony, come with Science, and the secret of its presence lies in the universal need of better health and morals."

Parents who are Christian Scientists, perceiving the value of sound morals as well as sound physical health, should be especially diligent in training their children along the line of moral rectitude as well as attending to their health and general education. Our Leader says very significantly on page 5 of "Miscellaneous Writings," "Mothers should be able to produce perfect health and perfect morals in their children—and ministers, to heal the sick—by studying this scientific method of practising Christianity." There can be no doubt as to Mrs. Eddy's meaning. She certainly draws the attention of Christian Scientists to their duty, making it clear that they should hold themselves responsible for the health and morals—the "perfect health and perfect morals"—of their children. And can there be any doubt that this entails that the parents shall themselves be demonstrating good health and morals through their understanding of Christian Science?
