At Evening Time

However dense the darkness seems,
However long the dreary night,
Dawn reappears, dispelling dreams,
And morning wakes in radiant light.

Likewise, on earth-bound sense that clings
To fear and doubt, to time and space,
Dawns truth, "with healing in his wings,"
Dispersing clouds, revealing grace.

The morning of faith's risen day
Advances to the noontide bright
Of understanding, and we say:
"At evening time it shall be light."

This is God's day. Its gifts unfold
As wisdom, purity, and might;
No night is there—man grows not old—
"At evening time it shall be light."
