My introduction to Christian Science came through the healing of one of the members of my family of insomnia.
Before becoming interested in Christian Science I had suffered an accident while participating in a hockey game, which resulted in my becoming a sufferer from the ailment known as "athlete's knee." Four physicians with whom I was acquainted, worked in turn on my case, but they informed me that the only remedy was an operation, although none of them would take the responsibility. I was finally directed to a prominent surgeon who has specialized in such cases. After an examination and treatment he advised that an operation would prevent infection, but that the very best I could hope for was a stiff knee and no further enjoyment from any kind of sports.
Before submitting to this decree I resolved to try the other cures that my friends recommended, and amongst them were bone setters, osteopaths, and chiropractors. Each of these gave me temporary relief; and I continued, often with great discomfort, to engage in athletics. Finally "God's opportunity" did come. I had been interested in Christian Science for several years and had received many appreciated healings when this old malady returned in its most severe form. I was not participating in any form of sport, but the suffering increased. Elastic bandages, which had always helped, now were of no avail; and at the most inopportune times my knee would become helpless. In vain I tried the old remedies. Neither the allopaths and their liniments nor the drugless healers and manipulation were able to help me. One day when the suffering was at its worst, I found myself walking along the street where the practitioner who had helped me had his office. My thoughts turned to Christian Science, and for the first time it dawned on me that I had been so sure that I understood all the details of my case and the hopelessness of it that I had never given what I knew to be the truth a chance.
