A Large Place

He hath "set me in a large place"—
Mid-ocean, came the thought—
And vision, Godward turned, beheld
The might His hand hath wrought.

And as I stood to see Him there,
Facing the boundless blue,
I seemed to feel within His arms
How close His children drew.

The shores we could not see at hand,
For all we knew them there,
Grew near in thought as heart to heart,
Love spoke in accents fair.

His God-ideas, reflecting Him,
No language knew but love,
The boundaries of country dimmed
In thought that soared above

The confines of a race or creed,
The claim of other lands—
Seeing the Father in His son,
Held in His loving hands.

All one in understanding thought,
A unity of Life,
Wherein dwells man serenely sure,
Free from all thought of strife.

Thus is all distance done away
In universe of thought—
A large place circled in His love—
God's wonders newly taught.
