It is with a heart full of gratitude for the innumerable blessings which Christian Science has brought into my life that I write this testimony. I was drifting into invalidism, always tired, constantly suffering from an internal trouble for which I had tried every material remedy I knew of besides doctoring, dieting, hygiene, but without success. I knew no help or hope for it seemed that earnest prayers to the only God I knew were utterly fruitless. Just at my most despairing hour I asked a new acquaintance, a lady just arrived from England, if she knew of any cure for my trouble. I shall never forget her reply, "What a pity you don't know about Christian Science; you could be healed." Marvelous words to me—"Christian Science," of which I had never heard, and "healed." That sounded like the teaching of Jesus, with which I had been familiar from childhood. To my eager inquiry for information my friend said she had only then heard of Christian Science but that a young American lady who knew and could tell me all about it was coming to spend a day with her, and she would send for me to meet her. She sent some days later, and I went to her house feeling very ill and despairing; but after two hours' talk with the lady I climbed the steep kopjes to my home, a new woman, all fatigue vanished, although I could never relate or even recall what she said.

Not at once did I receive my healing physically; we had no practitioner, and Sunday services had only just then been begun in a private house. For many weeks I sent to my neighbor friend daily for the loan of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, returning the precious book before evening; and then was overjoyed at the gift of a copy from the dear American lady. Soon I was completely free and able to take up home duties which I had thought I should never be able to attend to again. It was the new understanding of God as the loving Father-Mother, of Christ as the healing spiritual idea, and of the real man with his rightful heritage of health, strength, and dominion that resuscitated me.

This healing occurred twenty-eight years ago, and no day has passed since then that has not given me cause for gratitude and joy even in some very dark times. Many healings have been experienced by me and by my family; and while I cannot relate any wonderful demonstrations, such as always delight me and strengthen faith when given in our periodicals, still the fact of a life redeemed, a consciousness uplifted, a sense of mortality replaced by a vision of immortality, bringing continuous good health and peace and a happy expectancy, all this constitutes to me a demonstration testifying to a great mental and mortal improvement. There is much still to be overcome of ignorance, fear, selfishness, but I press forward.
