With sincere gratitude to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy,...
With sincere gratitude to our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and to God for the many blessings I have received through the study and application of the truth as revealed in Christian Science, I offer this testimony.
Some twenty years ago, after being away for a short while, I was called home by the passing on of my mother, and found there a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, together with the Bible and a Christian Science Quarterly. A friend who was interested in this truth was there giving us comfort, and I found consolation in reading the Lesson-Sermons.
Some four or five months afterwards I was taken ill with what had previously been diagnosed as pharyngitis, to which I had been subject for a number of years, never having passed a winter without being in bed a week or two at a time on account of it. After a day of suffering I decided that if Christian Science heals I could prove it, and taking the Bible and Science and Health I knelt down by a chair, intending to pray to God to deliver me. As I knelt there with my books I realized for the first time that if God knows no disease— has no consciousness of it—then there was no use in talking to Him about it or asking Him to remove that which He knows nothing of. I realized then that I did not know how to pray. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer"; and in the sincere desire to know how to pray I remembered that there was a whole chapter on prayer in our textbook. Turning to this, I read the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation, as given on pages 16 and 17; then I read the ninety-first Psalm from the Bible; and when I had finished I was completely healed. It was as if the disease were just erased. It was an instantaneous healing, and has ever remined in consciousness as an absolute proof that Christian Science heals and heals quickly. In the years that have followed this experience Christian Science has been my only physician; and I am indeed grateful that through this Science of Truth revealed I am learning to pray; learning that affirmation of the truth about God, man, and the universe is effectual prayer.
