When Christian Science was presented to me, it came as...

When Christian Science was presented to me, it came as a direct answer to a prayer that I made in a time of great trouble. I prayed that God would show me a sign that I might know was true. I was very unhappy, owing to the suicide of a near and dear one. The doctor said I was suffering from shock. All the functions of my body were out of order, as well as my nervous system. I could not eat or sleep. A friend who was worried about me, and who knew that Christian Science was powerful, although she herself did not follow its teachings, lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I began to read the Preface and the chapter on Prayer. I felt comforted and full of hope, and continued to read. I was sure I had the answer to my prayer; and although I understood very little, I felt much better and began to eat and sleep and to be more normal. I was not near any Christian Scientists, nor did I know how to get in touch with any. Three months after I began to study the textbook, I went to Paris. There I found a Christian Science Reading Room, and at my request was wisely guided to a practitioner's office. In one treatment I was healed of the horror and haunting memory of that suicide, as well as of the sorrow and many other false beliefs. Never can I be grateful enough to that consecrated practitioner! Continuing my study, I found that my progress depended on my watching my thoughts and correcting them, and that therefore I had to make some effort, and must not depend entirely on others for my healing! I have had an instantaneous healing of a cold in the head, and a gradual and complete healing of troublesome internal organic trouble of many years' standing.

I am so grateful for this beautiful truth, and the constant comfort of Christian Science. After I had been studying but a short time, the cigarette habit left me quite naturally. I am now well and strong, able to take an active part in the work of the Christian Science Society of which I am a member. I have enjoyed the happiness of class instruction and am so thankful for it, and for all the help I have had along the way from loving Christian Scientists. My dearest wish is so to purify my thought that I may help others as I myself have been helped.
