No Hater or Hatred

MRS. EDDY writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 262), "Divine Mind is the only cause or Principle of existence." We learn also in Christian Science that this Mind is divine Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. Since God — Life, Truth, and Love — is the only cause or creator of man and the universe, there can be no real effect so entirely opposite to the one cause as a mortal capable of what is called hatred.

But, one may ask, if there is no hatred, nor a hater, nor cause for their existence, who and what is it that seems to hate? In the light of Christian Science the explanation is entirely logical. Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 275): "All substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, and effect belong to God. These are His attributes, the eternal manifestations of the infinite divine Principle, Love." If these statements are true, — and they are,— we must of a necessity reject hatred as causeless and unreal. How could divine Principle evolve or cognize anything so completely opposite to Love as hatred? We answer that it cannot and does not! All that ever seems to hate is a so-called mortal, a supposed mind in matter. It is by no means the man of God's creating. The opposite, sense-formed man has only a fabulous existence, and it is this unreal mentality that seems to be hate or a hater.

Our Leader says in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (pp. 12, 13), "Evil is neither quality nor quantity: it is not intelligence, a person or a principle, a man or a woman, a place or a thing, and God never made it." Into this negation must be placed the hater and hatred, the lie and liar. Then the reply to the question, Who or what is it that seems to hate? can only be, Nothing. God creates all good; there is nothing else besides Him, and man, His reflection, can reflect only the qualities of his Maker. Any other seeming quality or consciousness is an effect of the hypnotic sleep, the Adam-dream of a mind in matter; and it is the resultant false education, along material lines, which keeps mortals in bondage to sin, disease, and death. How grateful, then, should we be to Mary Baker Eddy for her teachings, which enable us to turn from the seeming bondage of materiality and to recognize man's true selfhood as the perfect offspring of perfect Principle!
