On page 3 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says: "Gratitude is much more than a verbal expression of thanks. Action expresses more gratitude than speech." Mere words could not express the gratitude I feel for all the many benefits I have experienced through the study and application of the truths about God and man in His image, as taught in the works of Mary Baker Eddy. Physically, mentally, morally, and spiritually I have been lifted out of false beliefs, and to-day I rejoice in some degree of progress, though seeing much that must still be overcome. My prayer is that I may daily express more gratitude through right thinking and acting.

Brought up in an orthodox church, I early questioned its teachings and was unable to accept a God of vengeance and hate. As I grew older I drifted away from the church and became an atheist. I thought much on the subject, and was deeply troubled, greatly fearing death, or oblivion. However, I finally arrived at the conclusion that there must be a Supreme Being with a supreme intelligence. In March, 1917, I was taken seriously ill. Believing myself to be passing on, I prayed earnestly to God as I then conceived Him to be. I recovered, and for six months thereafter the name "Christian Science" kept coming to my thought, though I knew no one of that faith and knew nothing of the teachings of the religion.

In September, 1917, I was again taken ill, and two doctors said I should not regain my health without an operation. I steadily grew worse until, at my request and through the kindness of one of the physicians, a Christian Science practitioner was called. Four days later I attended a Christian Science Sunday service, though I had been bedridden when the practitioner was called. The understanding that came with this healing was marvelous beyond description. For the first time in twenty-five years of pondering I had found the true God — the God of love, not of hate. The Comforter had come!
