Our Hymnal in the Home

RELIGION rightly understood and lived finds expression in joyousness; and the Christian Science Hymnal provides us with a channel through which this joyousness may continually be expressed. Our hymns, with their spiritual, uplifting messages to all mankind, are a vital and precious part of every Christian Science service.

Throughout the Bible the duty and the healing value of singing run like a golden thread. The words "sing" and "singing" occur many times in the Psalms and in Isaiah; while in his letter to the Colossians Paul beautifully expresses it thus: "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."

It is sometimes felt by teachers in Christian Science Sunday Schools that the cooperation of parents in the matter of practicing hymns with the children in their own homes would be of inestimable value to all concerned. Little children love to sing, and join eagerly when the words and tune are known; but when an unfamiliar hymn is selected, this lack of familiarity is reflected in the quality of the singing, so that in a measure the entire service suffers.
