It is with a heart full of gratitude to Christian Science...
It is with a heart full of gratitude to Christian Science and to its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, that this testimony is given.
Over eleven years ago, when I had been in the United States about three years, my health began to fail. I had no home. A friend urged me to go to a physician, and I went to three, but none of them seemed able to tell me what the trouble was. The medicine they prescribed had the opposite effect from what it should have had. I lost in weight and both looked and felt miserable. With the little money I had I took a two months' vacation, going to a quiet place in the country; but I was not any better.
Then a severe attack of boils manifested itself. I tried to hide this condition because I did not want the people in whose home I stayed to send me to a physician. But the pain was so severe that I was unable to hide it any longer. "You go right over and see the physician," my friend said. The physician told me he could not do much for me; in two or three days he would lance the first boil, and three more were in evidence which would have to undergo the same treatment. On my return home I told my friend how utterly discouraged I was: that life was not worth while, and that I did not care what happened to me, as I did not want to go back to the physician. A relative of this friend overheard our conversation and asked my friend if he might offer me help in Christian Science, as I had said so strongly that I did not want to return to the physician. He talked to me about Christian Science, which I had never heard of before, and tried to find a practitioner, but was not successful. A copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy was, however, given me, and I was told to read it. I began to read the first chapter, called "Prayer." As I came to the ninth page I suddenly felt that the boil had opened, although it was not supposed to do that for two or three days. After finishing the chapter I went to bed and slept well. The next morning I told the Christian Scientist what had happened. He said, "Continue to read the book; I do not think you need the help of a practitioner." I read the chapter on Prayer over and over for three days; and at the end of the third day every vestige of the boils had disappeared, not even a mark being left to show where they had been. Then I thought, If Christian Science can heal me in such a short time after what the physician said, perhaps it can heal me of this other trying condition, if I continue to read; but it will take a long time to understand what I read! So I gave myself three years in which to get well. It took only three months. At the end of that time I was completely changed and able to work as in the past.
