Inspiration through Obedience

On page 454 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way." And on page 117 of "Miscellaneous Writings" she further states that "He illumines one's way when one is obedient." In these statements two main facts are apparent, namely, that it is divine Love which illumines, and that this spiritual illumination is to be reflected through obedience.

What, then, should we do when tempted with disobedience and self-will? Christian Science never leaves us without the right answer to every sincere question and desire. We should realize that obedience is the natural state of man in God's image and that in the sight of God and man there is no such thing as a sinful mortal. We should understand that faults of character have no creator, no attraction, intelligence, or self-assertive power. When material sense aruges that a child or an adult is disobedient, willful, or unloving, we should deny these counterfeit beliefs and set ourselves to realize and manifest only that which is characteristic of Mind's offspring.

On page 295 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy points out that "the universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them." Speaking from the standpoint of Truth, the assertion of disobedience as real is a denial of the allness of divine Mind and of the obedience of each one of its ideas. God has created man in His likeness, not in His unlikeness; and His image is always under His care, sheltered from all beliefs of the flesh.
