When I was told of Christian Science about nine years...
When I was told of Christian Science about nine years ago, I asked if it could possibly heal a number of warts which had been on my hand for several years. My friend tried to convince me that it could, and he quoted cases of healing brought about through applying the teachings of this Science. After arguing with him, I remember saying, "Well, when Christian Science removes these warts, I will certainly accept it." I very soon borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to read. A new sense of peace and joy came to me, and I realized what Jesus meant when he said to his disciples, "Your joy no man taketh from you." I purchased a copy of this book and began to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily, and to attend the Christian Science church services. I began to learn of the one true God, who is infinite good and Love, and who knows nothing of discord. In the words of the Bible, "Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity."
Whenever I thought of or noticed the warts, I declared that they were no part of God's creation, and as God knew nothing of them, I must see their unreality. After a time I ceased thinking of them, and when next they came to my thought, I found to my great joy that they had completely disappeared. This occurred within six months of the time I purchased the textbook.
Another healing during the early days of my study, for which I am grateful, was that of a poisoned thumb. This was healed at a Wednesday evening testimony meeting. On the Sunday previous the thumb first pained me, and on Monday I was advised to have help from a Christian Science practitioner or a doctor. I decided to test Christian Science, so an interview was arranged with a practitioner. She lovingly turned my thoughts away from the thumb to the perfection of God and man, and did not even ask to look at my hand. The things she told me have been of great help to me ever since. On Monday and Tuesday nights I had very little rest, and on Wednesday felt very much depressed, as the pain seemed to affect my whole arm. I was asked if I would accompany a friend to a testimony meeting, but I said that all I needed was rest and sleep. However, I allowed myself to be persuaded that I should gain some good by going to the service. I felt very sorry for myself at the beginning of the service, but evidently responded to the truth given out, for towards the end I felt like singing for joy. At the same time I realized that I was healed. On arriving home I found the thumb still swollen to about twice the normal size, but this did not disturb me. I had a perfect night's rest, and in the morning all inflammation had gone.
