Many years ago Christian Science was presented to my mother, who had been an invalid practically all her life. She accepted it as a beautiful religion, but failed to understand fully how its healing works were accomplished. However, she was healed of some of the maladies which held her in bondage, and was released from invalidism. This healing caused me to see Christian Science as the truth; but as I did not feel the need of it, I did not study the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

The years rolled on, and I was contented with doctors, materia medica, orthodox churches, and materiality. Then came the world war, which placed my husband in the trenches in France and carried my only son to West Point. The separation brought to me fear and worry, and a nervous breakdown which the doctors failed to alleviate. After months of suffering, a friend asked me one day why I did not try Christian Science. That question brought to memory the number of times I had said, "If I ever need Christian Science I will turn to it." From that moment all connection with doctors and medicines was severed, and reliance upon God was begun.

The healing of the nervousness was a slow one, covering a period of several years; but during that time many ills of the flesh and faults of character were overcome. Many times during those years I sought consolation and assurance, and found it on page 566 of the textbook in the following passage: "As the children of Israel were guided triumphantly through the Red Sea, ... so shall the spiritual idea guide all right desires in their passage from sense to Soul, from a material sense of existence to the spiritual, up to the glory prepared for them who love God."
