When I was in a very weak and hopeless condition as a...

When I was in a very weak and hopeless condition as a result of many years of suffering from an organic disease, I turned to Christian Science for healing and received my help. As a last resource the physician had suggested an operation, but he held out no hope that I should be helped permanently. In my extremity I asked that a Christian Science practitioner be sent for. She lovingly explained that though an operation might seem to meet the immediate need, no surgeon's knife could cut out the wrong thinking that had brought me to this condition. This logic appealed to my reason, and I very humbly asked her to help me. After three treatments I was able to get out of bed and resume my household duties. In five treatments the diseased condition was completely healed, and there has never been the slightest return. For a week I continued to take the tonic the doctor had ordered, but one day as I was about to drink it I was impelled to throw it down the sink instead; and I have never touched a drop of medicine since. For fifteen years I had been a slave to tonics, patent medicines, diets, and hygiene, and from that time I was freed from them all. I was healed of the cigarette habit while reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and this at the very moment that I was declaring I would never give it up. I was not able to finish the cigarette I was smoking, and I have never had any desire to smoke another. I have witnessed healings of paralysis, infected wounds, and broken bones through Christian Science treatment alone.

A few years after my first healing I suffered from a nervous breakdown, accompanied by much discouragement, despondency, and insomnia. Through the loving, patient work of loyal practitioner I was enabled to make more decided effort to help myself, and I gradually gained a firmer understanding of the truth that makes free. The insomnia lasted for several months; but I learned through this experience that we really rest in the consciousness of Truth and Love. I am most grateful for this lesson, for the clearer light gained, and for a better physical condition than I had ever known before.

For the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and of active service in a branch church, and for class instruction, I am continually grateful. For the noble, unselfed life of our beloved Leader, who made it possible for all to understand the words and works of the Master, Christ Jesus, and who gave us the revelation of God as divine Principle, Love, I am more grateful than words can ever express.
