I first heard of Christian Science over twenty-two years...

I first heard of Christian Science over twenty-two years ago, and it has completely changed my outlook. I had never understood the religion which I had been taught; I could not reconcile it with the state of affairs which I observed in the world around me; I disliked churchgoing, and was rapidly losing faith. Christian Science was the revelation which I needed, and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was indeed the "key" to the Scriptures, unlocking the treasures which had been hidden in the Bible, overlaid with the man-made doctrines and creeds of successive ecclesiastical systems.

Progress was gradual, because I was not yet willing to leave all for Christ, and I had to meet and master several old enemies in the shape of fear, discouragement, and false appetites; but step by step I was being led away from matter into the kingdom of heaven, and I had all the time an underlying faith in the truth of Mrs. Eddy's teaching, and a belief that it would lead me out of my difficulties. That belief has been replaced gradually with knowledge, as I have learned more of Christian Science, and with understanding, as I have seen proof after proof of its availability to meet the needs of men. Many of the long and painful struggles I can now see were necessary to purification and progress, and to the gaining of a proper sense of humility; for we have indeed to become as little children if we are to be taught of God. Many were the times when I was tempted to go back, when Christian Science seemed too transcendental, and when the evidence of the material senses clamored to be believed. I knew then what kind of problem Moses had to face when the whole people begged to go back to the fleshpots of Egypt. But the words of our Leader always kept me from taking more than a first step backward, and I learned further lessons in steadfastness and trustworthiness.

Now I can look back over the process which has been made and realize what a transformation has been effected in my life: the smoking and social drinking habits have been dropped; uncertain health and constant reliance upon medicines have given place to well-being and practical freedom from physical difficulties. For many years now I have had not a single day's sick leave. Many faults of disposition have been overcome: fear and despondency have given place to hope and a joyous anticipation of blessings to come. In the home and in business, difficulties have been smoothed out and a wider sense of harmony and good will has been brought out.
