Divine Beatitudes

How often have those visiting a Christian Science church for the first time been impressed with the glow of happiness they have observed in the faces of many present there! And why should the Christian Scientist be happy? Because he is making an honest and successful endeavor to live the life of a Christian; and there can be no such thing as an unhappy genuine Christian. This may seem a bold statement, but a little consideration will show it to be true.

What is a Christian? A Christian is one who is patterning his life on that of Christ Jesus; who is endeavoring to carry out the commands of our Master in their entirety. Two often-quoted injunctions of Jesus are these: "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature .... And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover;" and, "Heal the sick."

Healing the sick is, therefore, an essential plank in the platform of true Christianity; and it is one of the principal features that distinguish the Church of Christ, Scientist, from other Christian denominations. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and her other writings, Mary Baker Eddy stresses the importance of healing the sick as well as reforming the sinner.
