Christian Science first came to my notice in the spring of...

Christian Science first came to my notice in the spring of 1917. About two years later, during the influenza epidemic, both my mother and I suffered from it. On the morning of the fourth day my condition became so alarming that my father insisted on calling a physician. My mother, however, asked him to wait until noon, and promised that if I was then no better she would comply with his wish. In the meantime, she went to a practitioner to ask for help, which was lovingly given; and on her return home, about ten minutes after she left, she found me sleeping peacefully. The fever was gone, and in a very short time I awoke healed. But I was not ready for the purification of thought requisite for progress, so I lapsed into the old routine except when a physical disorder presented itself, or when someone endeavored to condemn the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, or her works.

About six years ago, however, discouragement and depression forced me again to seek divine Love. I was led, through a classmate, to attend a Christian Science Sunday School. That Sunday's experience proved to me that God is everywhere, and that He is ever ready to help His children. A few weeks after I was enrolled in the Sunday school an opportunity to prove the omnipresence of God came to me one afternoon during one of my classes when I was taken with appendicitis. The only thoughts that seemed to come to me were those contained in the first sentence of "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the words, "God is love." I held to these truths to the best of my understanding, and in less than five minutes the pain had entirely disappeared. After that time there were two slight attacks, which occurred over three years ago; both were quickly overcome. I was especially grateful for that healing, because it proved to me that it is not necessary to understand all of Christian Science in order to be blessed, but rather to have a consecrated desire to put into practice the little we do know.

Sprains, burns, colds, and numerous other discordant conditions have been overcome. There are still many errors to be discarded, but it is a joy to know that "divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (ibid., p. 494). For these healings I am indeed thankful, but for the peace of mind that has come to me through this wonderful teaching I am most grateful; for through it discouragement has vanished, fear is rapidly fleeing, and many other erroneous thoughts are fading away. One of the channels provided by Mrs. Eddy for which I am particularly grateful is the Sunday school. Although the privilege of attendance was mine for less than two years, it has meant more to me than words can express. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church, as well as in a Christian Science Society, in which it is a great privilege to serve.
