Value of Little Things

It has been said that human life is not a little bundle of big things but a big bundle of little things. Humanity is inclined to look only for big things—big opportunities, big gains, big successes—and to overlook the value of little things. But, seriously considered, it is the little things, so called, that help to make life big.

Mary Baker Eddy recognized the importance of detail, the value of little things. She says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 123): "Seeing that we have to attain to the ministry of righteousness in all things, we must not overlook small things in goodness or in badness, for 'trifles make perfection,' and 'the little foxes ... spoil the vines.'"

Opportunities come often for little deeds of kindness. "Some other time" and "Will it be right?" are, however, forms that "the little foxes" assume. Hesitancy and indecision may argue to prevent us from giving. Small as the sowing of even one seed of kindness may seem to be, it is an important duty in the ministry of righteousness.
