Iowegian and Citizen

Complaint was made in the Iowegian of May 18 that a letter from this office printed in your paper some three months ago did not satisfy the clergyman whose criticism of certain Christian Science teachings occasioned its writing. I should like to explain that my letter was not written for the reverend gentleman, but merely to place before your readers exact statements concerning some of the points of Christian Science which were mistakenly referred to by him, and which seemed most worth while to correct.

For the information of any of your readers who with our critic may perchance believe that if God be "All," He must be everything both good and bad, I should like to make clear that Christian Science presents no such concept of the Almighty. God known in Christian Science is indeed All-in-all, as the Scriptures clearly imply Him to be and as was stated in my former communication on this subject; but He is infinite good, without taint or knowledge of evil, even as recorded in Habakkuk, where He is said to be "of purer eyes than to behold evil."

Divine healing, as taught in Christian Science, was practiced by Jesus and the early Christian and was revealed to Mrs. Eddy through a right understanding of God. I most emphatically deny the minister's allegation that Mrs. Eddy "received her ideas of healing from Mr. Quimby;" for the very good reason that the system of healing she established is wholly spiritual, whereas Mr. Quimby, who was not even religiously inclined, disclaimed any knowledge of spiritual healing but relied entirely on some form of magnetic power to bring relief from suffering.
