I am so grateful for Christian Science, for it has taught me the prayer of understanding, which heals and regenerates, and which is true thinking.

I was brought up in a home of ignorance and superstition, with lack of almost everything good and beautiful. I was not happy, but would go to sleep at night thinking about good and beautiful things. I can see now that this was true prayer, and that it protected and guarded me. But I became too repressed and shut up within myself. When I was about fourteen years old I ran away from home and found work. Later on I married and had the good things of the world, but they did not satisfy. I was sick and unhappy. At last a doctor told me there was no help for me; that I should never be well and should not live very long. This is where Christian Science found me.

A friend told me about God, explaining that He is Love and our Father and Mother; and I was healed. She gave me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and I read every day and most of the night for two weeks. I was on the mountain top, so to speak, but I had to come down and prove—learn to pray understandingly. I could see that even as a child I had been reaching out for this truth; that desiring good and beautiful things is true prayer, for, as Mrs. Eddy says on page 1 of Science and Health, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds."
