During the past twelve months I have found constant comfort in applying the simple scientific rules of Christian Science, as I understand them, to the general depressed condition of business; and I have at least learned that business depressions are mental, and that stock debacles and general unemployment are but manifestations of wrong thinking. The remedy lies in correcting our thought. Those of us who are studying Christian Science are learning that business depressions, whatever the form they take, cannot deprive us of our God-given "dominion ... over all the earth;" nor can they for a single moment shut off God's supply to His ideas, which is continuous and eternal.
I have recently engaged in the largest undertaking of my business career with the full assurance of God's protecting care, all material evidences to the contrary notwithstanding. In attempting to work out the financial plan of the new project, I was told that money was not available for any purpose, much less for construction work, as the whole country was badly overbuilt. As soon as it was discovered that the business depression had brought such deep-seated conviction, I immediately asked for help in Christian Science. It soon became apparent that such an enterprise would not only meet a great need in the community, but would furnish some relief to the effects of the depression by giving work and sustenance to more than a thousand people.
The concern to whom the plan of financing was submitted, a large insurance company in a distant state, was anxious to cooperate; but it developed that the laws of that state, as well as those of the state where the project was to be built, would not permit an insurance company to make loans on leaseholds. After studying the problem for several days, the general attorney of the insurance company, as well as the attorney representing the building project, advised that it could not be done under any circumstances. This information was immediately communicated to the practitioner. Several days went by without any apparent change, but we refused to recognize failure, holding steadfastly to the immutable and unchanging law of good, and knowing that, as our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 494, 206), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need," and, "In the scientific relation of God to man, ... whatever blesses one blesses all." Finally, entirely separate from the legal department, one of the officers of the company found a provision in its charter which permitted it to invest a small percentage of its capital stock in leasehold bonds. The loan was then quickly and finally completed, proving again that our problems, of whatever kind or character, may be quickly solved when we turn understandingly to the all-sufficiency and inexhaustibility of God's infinite supply.
