Spirituality and Its Effects
Mrs. Eddy never failed to acknowledge Christ Jesus as the great spiritual Way-shower to mankind. She took the Master as her example and expected her followers, Christian Scientists, to do the same. She knew that Jesus had demonstrated the Christ more than any other who had lived on earth; and having discovered the Science of being, which made clear to her the Christ as the spiritual idea of God in its healing office, she set herself the task of demonstrating what she understood of it in the healing of sin and disease, in the overcoming of all unlike good, even as he had done.
The Master's example, then, stands out before the Christian Scientist as that which he should strive to emulate. And what does his example preeminently show? A constant overcoming of materiality, a never failing victory over evil, evidenced in the healing of all manner of disease and sin, and the overruling of the so-called material laws in which mankind believes. And all this through his spirituality! Our Leader writes of him on page 51 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "His spirituality separated him from sensuousness, and caused the selfish materialist to hate him; but it was this spirituality which enabled Jesus to heal the sick, cast out evil, and raise the dead."
Just as disease is the seeming effect of materiality, so is healing the result of spirituality. It was Paul who declared to the Romans that "to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace," carnal-mindedness being the mind of the flesh, thought which is sensuous or material. And, as Christian Science shows, thought that is spiritual is able, in the degree of its spirituality, to heal carnal-mindedness and its supposititious effects. This is being demonstrated continuously in the Christian Science movement, which very largely consists of those who have been healed either through their own work of attaining to a greater degree of spirituality, or through the work of others who had previously gained a measure of it.
