Our Problem

We hear on every side of the many and diverse problems which confront mortals in their pursuit of life and happiness. As a rule, each thinks his own problem more difficult than his neighbor's. Some struggle doggedly along with their difficulties; others endeavor to forget them by indulging in intoxicating gayety. Some seem to be almost overwhelmed by them; and one and all long for their successful solution. To weary mortals Christian Science brings a helpful, healing message. It shows that our troubles come from erring human belief, and it points out the way of escape from the discords of mortal thinking.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, states (p. 492), "For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence." It follows, that all our problems may be reduced to the one problem of holding thought steadfastly to the basic fact of spiritual existence. Then right reasoning ensues; and right reasoning, with inspiration, leads to the solution of the problem.

Religionists are agreed that spiritual existence implies the reign of harmony, perfection, and freedom from woe. Many, however, suppose this to be a future state, attainable only at a remote and indefinite period. But Jesus did not so teach; he stated that the kingdom of God, or heaven, is "within you" and "at hand." It is obvious that by this he meant that heaven is a condition of consciousness, and that it is ever present and immediately available.
