My interest in Christian Science was aroused when I saw a friend healed by it. She had been lying in bed paralyzed from her hips down. Afterwards she was able to move about freely and do all kinds of housework.

I first heard a Christian Science lecture on Easter Sunday, 1926. Some of it sounded very much like Greek to me. I must have gained some understanding of the truth, however, for a desire to learn all I could of Christian Science came to me. I began reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but found many things I could not understand, as it was entirely opposite to my former beliefs. Nevertheless, I was convinced that this was the truth and that I must accept it, no matter if I did not understand all of it at one reading. Now I know that spiritual understanding may be gradually gained. Mrs. Eddy says on page 254 of Science and Health that "to begin aright and to continue the strife of demonstrating the great problem of being, is doing much."

Before I finished reading the textbook through the first time my spine was healed of an injury caused by a fall at the age of fourteen. I had spent years trying the remedies of medical doctors, osteopaths, and chiropractors, but gained only temporary relief. One doctor was honest enough to tell me that the trouble was incurable, and that he could only ease the pain.
