In 1924 some dear friends called my attention to Christian Science
In 1924 some dear friends called my attention to Christian Science. At that time I was in great distress from which, according to human opinion, there seemed to be no escape. My family affairs were completely upset. Since there was nothing else for me to do, I relied absolutely on Truth, which was very lovingly explained to me. I did not understand it at the time, but I had confidence that Truth would be victorious. In a few days everything was harmoniously solved. Strengthened by this wonderful proof of God's omnipotence and goodness, we bought the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had been studying the textbook for about three weeks when I noticed that I was healed of a disease of the heart and a nervous trouble from which I had suffered for over twenty years. My relatives had maintained that I had inherited the disease and that it was incurable. I was so occupied with thoughts of Truth that I forgot the complaint.
Two years ago I was healed of blood poisoning in a few hours. My leg was badly swollen and there was a red mark. As this leg had been operated upon for blood poisoning when I was nine years old, I knew the symptoms, and fear tried to overtake me. There came to thought at once the passage in the Bible from Exodus: "Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he [Moses] put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow. And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh." I pondered over this passage; fear disappeared, and the appearance of blood poisoning returned to its nothingness.
Our daughter, then eight years old, while walking on stilts in the kitchen, slipped on the floor and fell, striking the back of her head. As the child remained motionless I turned immediately away from appearances and called to her to repeat "the scientific statement of being," which is found on page 468 of the textbook; but there was no response. I began to work at once as we are taught in Christian Science, and knew that a spiritual idea cannot be injured. In about ten minutes the child got up, put her stilts away, and remarked that nothing had happened to her and she did not feel any pain. She also said that she had heard me tell her to repeat "the scientific statement of being" but then knew nothing more.
