In 1912, after many years of suffering during which I underwent several operations, I found myself in a worse condition than I had ever been before receiving so much medical treatment. The physician attending me at that time told me that I would have to undergo four operations in one, or I would never be well again. I secretly and sincerely went to God in prayer to show me the way. It had come to me plainly that I could never be healed by material remedies; and after many weeks of silent prayer "a still small voice" kept coming to me saying, Why not try Christian Science? I had heard a little about Christian Science at that time, but knew nothing of its teachings.
One evening I decided to visit a practitioner who was making her home with one of my friends, and I can see now that I was divinely led protected all the way. I had no desire to tell anyone where I was going or what my motive was in going out alone. After I talked to the practitioner a few minutes, she gave me a treatment. I felt disappointed after my first visit and almost resolved not to go again; but after thinking it over with an open mind, honestly trying to obey the voice that was speaking to me, I decided that I would go once more and that then if I received no benefit I would give it up entirely. On my second visit, after a short talk and a treatment from the practitioner, there dawned in my consciousness a new light; everything seemed changed, and I realized that I was healed—healed instantly.
I could not even tell the practitioner that I was healed, nor talk to anyone about it. My consciousness was so filled with joy I did not want to talk about it. I borrowed a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy from a friend, a student of Christian Science, and began to read it. From the first, as I read on and on, I felt that it was what I had waited and looked for all my life.
