In your issue of January 23 a clergyman is reported as saying: "I do not suppose there is any more fantastic theory than that on which Christian Science is founded, that matter and body do not exist, and that therefore pain cannot exist, and yet I suppose there has not been any faith healing which has been so successful." In reply, may I refer the reverend gentleman to the words of Jesus, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."

Mary Baker Eddy in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," asks this very pertinent question (p. 416): "Where is the pain while the patient sleeps?" Pain sometimes seems very real to frightened human sense, and it is only by turning away from the body, or the false belief of life in matter, and realizing the all-presence and all-power of God, Love, that we can demonstrate the healing truth which Jesus taught. As Paul declared: "They that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

It is good to know that the Church of England is awakening to the necessity of carrying out the practical teaching of Jesus, namely, to heal the sick as well as the sinning.
