Faith, Understanding, Works

Some earnest seekers after Truth, who have found it difficult to understand the great message to humanity which is contained in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, after reading this textbook once have placed it aside, saying it seemed too abstruse to grasp readily, but at some future time they would read it again. In such a case it would be well to remember that "God is no respecter of persons," and that it is His good will that all should share alike and benefit in the revelation of Truth which Christian Science brings to mankind.

Our Lord and Saviour, Christ Jesus, said, "Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." This should make it clear to us that neither exceptional intelligence nor exceptional education is necessary to understand the truth. We need to approach Christian Science as we approached the first simple rules of arithmetic. At these early stages the teacher does not attempt to teach the pupil the more advanced rules of arithmetic. He begins to prepare the child's thought, so that it may be ready to receive the greater facts as they are gradually unfolded to him. In our effort to gain an understanding of Christian Science, the childlike attitude of faith will be found of inestimable value; indeed, it cannot be gained in any other way. We must take the first steps with faith, and step by step we shall be rewarded by understanding.

Those entering into the study of the all-absorbing subject of Mind-healing are naturally eager to proceed quickly, so that they may be able to demonstrate the truth in solving their problems. At each stage it is well for us to see how far we have attained in humility, charity, consecration. These and other virtues are needful on the journey from sense to Soul, and much help in this direction is derived from gaining a thorough understanding of man's true relationship to God. We need to know that man, made after God's image and likeness, is perfect, and that this real man is sinless, diseaseless, deathless. In gaining this understanding, we shall be greatly helped by studying daily the Lesson-Sermon found in the Christian Science Quarterly.
