Your correspondent apparently disagrees with the statements made about man, given in your report of the Christian Science lecture held in the Town Hall, Birmingham.

The criticism, as reported in the News, includes the following remark: "What he [the lecturer] is reported to have said about man, is, judged by the ordinary and generally accepted teaching of religion and the results of scientific research, sheer nonsense."

It is well known that people representing "the ordinary and generally accepted teaching of religion" so entirely misunderstood the words of Jesus on one occasion that they said to him in reply to a statement which conflicted with their belief, "Now we know that thou hast a devil." It will be interesting, therefore, to consider a statement made by the lecturer, taken from Mrs. Eddy's work, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and allow it to be judged on the precise terms laid down by our critic, with the exception that the highest authority of religion—the Bible—be accepted as the standard, for, obviously, generally accepted views to-day, as of old, are no guaranty of authority.
