Awakening the Patient

Christian Science declares the truth that only one real power exists, namely, God; and that God is infinite good. It thus affirms the fact that perfection alone is real. In other words, it proclaims that God, the creator, and man and the universe, His creation, are perfect. Further, Christian Science emphasizes the fact that there is but one real creation, the spiritual creation, and, consequently, that what men term a material creation does not really exist. The truth that God's spiritual creation alone is real and perfect is of the greatest importance; for through an understanding of it men are enabled to free themselves from the woes of mortal experience.

The fact that God and His creation are perfect means that inharmony does not exist as a reality; that it is unreal. Consequently, since sickness is a form of inharmony, sickness does not in reality exist. Hence man, the man of God's creating—the real man—is never inharmonious, never sick. How wonderful, through divine Science, to be able to make such a declaration as this, even though mortals seem to encounter sickness in so many forms! Mrs. Eddy's words on page 393 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Man is never sick, for Mind is not sick and matter cannot be," cannot be reversed, because they are based on an understanding of absolute Science.

The Christian Scientist approaches every case of sickness he has been asked to help with the knowledge that man, God's idea, is always in the enjoyment of perfect health. He knows that nothing can alter man's perfection. Sickness to the Christian Scientist is unreal, an illusion of false material sense, a dream of mortal consciousness; and from this illusion or dream he strives to awaken the patient. Our revered Leader writes on page 417 of Science and Health, "To the Christian Science healer, sickness is a dream from which the patient needs to be awakened;" and conscious of this, and understanding that it is the truth that heals, the words from Jeremiah come encouragingly to him, "I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord."
