The Principle of Health
"Having faith in the divine Principle of health and spiritually understanding God, sustains man under all circumstances." This great statement by Mrs. Eddy, found on page 319 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," lights the way for the emancipation of all mankind from sickness, sin, and death. How many, however, are looking to divine Principle for their health? Have they not been educated to look upon the physical body as the producer of both health and disease?
Christian Science traces every abnormal bodily condition to some conscious or unconscious mental discord which is then reproduced on the body. One of the factors of sickness is fear; and medicine cannot cure fear. But every mental and physical discord is amenable to the healing power of divine Principle, Love, and this irrefutable fact throws wide open the door of hope to discouraged sufferers. God-given health inheres in spiritual consciousness, and is subordinate to nothing so flimsy or variable as the belief in materiality. Health should be seen as the accompaniment of other God-given qualities. What does Principle demand in return for all the perfection and harmony which it bestows upon man in God's likeness? It demands the undivided reliance and constant obedience of those who seek their healing and awakening through the divinely mental and spiritual ministry of Christian Science, which is translating to mankind the omnipotence of God, Spirit.
"Discard all notions about lungs, tubercles, inherited consumption, or disease arising from any circumstance, and you will find that mortal mind, when instructed by Truth, yields to divine power, which steers the body into health" (ibid., pp. 425, 426). The establishment of health in Christian Science is a mental process, and it is never too late to achieve it. In fact, as regards grasping and applying the real remedy for all ills, "there is none other name under heaven ... whereby we must be saved." The power of God, good, is the only true healing power.
