Years ago a cousin from Ediburgh brought Christian Science...

Years ago a cousin from Ediburgh brought Christian Science to my notice. From childhood religious questions had always puzzled me, and I had read many books on theosophy, spiritualism, and other theories. I began to peruse "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy in much the same way, but soon found that this book opened the Scriptures to me. All my life I had suffered from headaches, and from severe coughs and colds. The attacks became less frequent as I studied the book, and when they occurred were quickly overcome without the aid of a practitioner, and with little effort or work on my part.

However, a testing time came when I found myself in a very serious physical condition. A trouble had developed which caused great pain in one knee and hip, and I was unable to extend the leg. I became rapidly worse, and a physician was consulted. After careful examination he diagnosed the condition as nervous exhaustion, and gave little encouragement of my regaining the use of the leg. X-ray treatment was prescribed and tried. By this time I was in correspondence with a Christian Science practitioner, but after some weeks I did not improve. I was in a helpless condition, suffering acute pain, and unable to move without the use of crutches. The address of an osteopath was sent to me, so I went to France and had osteopathic treatment. In the beginning I seemed to improve, and was able to walk a little without the crutches; then I had a relapse and a specialist was consulted, who advised an operation on the knee.

About this time I met a friend who was a Christian Scientist and asked her for help, which she lovingly gave during her holiday stay at the place where I was. We read Christian Science literature and talked together, and I began to get a clearer understanding of this religion. The condition of my leg was still far from normal, and I suffered much from general weakness. My great desire was to get a deeper knowledge of God, and for this purpose I went to a city where I had treatment from a practitioner. It was a wonderful experience. Through her patient, loyal work my eyes were gradually opened to glimpse the truth of being. Physical healing was slow, but with the untiring help of the practitioner, and more consecration on my part, each setback was overcome, and I know that a step was gained with each demonstration. This period of lameness and physical inactivity gave me the opportunity for more study of Christian Science, and I realized the meaning of the words in one of our beautiful hymns, "And turn'st my mourning into praise." My recovery came very gradually, but finally I had complete use of the knee and leg, and I am now able to lead a normal life again.
