Signs of the Times

[Rev. A. G. Cummings, as quoted in the Boston Transcript, Massachusetts]

The room to which Jesus directed his disciples was ... an upper room. We tire of the storm and stress of life, even our young people sometimes grow weary of the city's jostle. We feel that we must withdraw to higher ground, must seek a new perspective. Our bodies are insistent. We feed and clothe and warm them. Yet we know that, as we do this, manhood is only partly developed. This marvelous age supplies us daily with new, unsuspected wonders. But pleasure based on material things, however fresh and novel, is in itself confining. The soul reaches forth, seeking room above all lower levels, all lesser satisfactions.... There we may go and receive a new view of life's realities and come back to our duties and engagements able to adjust ourselves to this new perspective.
