Over twenty-six years ago I was suddenly left a widow...
Over twenty-six years ago I was suddenly left a widow with children to educate. During the trials that followed I began reading a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, lent to me by a sister-in-law who was a student of Christian Science. At that time I did not realize its power for harmony in the home, and had not yet gained an understanding of it when circumstances compelled me to give up my comfortable home and go to a Montana homstead. I continued reading, but did not then know of the periodical literature, and there were no Christian Scientists in the new locality.
One of the first demonstrations that came into my experience was over a financial difficulty. We had a well drilled; and although the work was not done satisfactorily, an unfair price was demanded and a law suit threatened. I firmly believed that God would show me the way out of this trouble, and I applied what I had learned of the operation of divine Principle, until a compromise was suggested and the terms of settlement were fair.
Each winter for many years I had severe attacks of tonsillitis and grippe, but I was healed of these through the study of Christian Science. I have also been healed of influenza. One winter, when I was stricken with pneumonia, it seemed as if "the last enemy" was very near. The efficient care of a Christian Science nurse provided by my son and his wife, and the clear work of a consecrated practitioner, brought me back to the enjoyment of even better health than before. There was no long period of convalescence; and I am ever grateful to all who assisted in this demonstration, which proved once more that "divine Love is our only physician, and never loses a case" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 132).
