Touching the Hem of the Garment

Perhaps one of the most encouraging of all the stories of healing which the Bible contains, is that told in the ninth chapter of Matthew, where it is recorded that a woman, bound many years by her infirmity, touched the hem of the garment of the Galilean healer, and was instantly made whole.

We can call to remembrance many cases of healing where seeming obstacles had to be overcome, as in the case of the sick carried with difficulty into the presence of Jesus for his benediction of healing; lepers, frequently segregated in remote places; and others who by reason of their infirmities were probably often isolated. Yet not in a single case was an obstacle so great as to debar the alert and confident suppliant from the fulfillment of his desire.

But in this narrative of a poor woman suffering from an infirmity of twelve years' standing, we find something so simple and direct that it is possible one might overlook the vital truths contained in the story. It all seemed so easy. She asked for no spoken word from the Master; no confession or request was on her lips. But we are told that in her heart she said, "If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole."
