Henry County Signal

It is unfortunate that the Signal opened its columns to such aspersions on Christian Science as appeared in a conspicuous announcement by a local church in your issue of November 14. There it was stated that an individual, after having been a Christian Scientist for sixteen years, "was converted to Christianity about two years ago," and that for months she had "wrestled with the teaching of Mrs. Eddy versus the teachings of the Bible."

Permit me to state that the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy are not contrary to, but based upon, the spiritual teachings of the Bible. Mrs. Eddy has mentioned the Bible repeatedly in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and her other published writings; and in no case has she departed from its teachings. On the contrary, she has adhered consistently to the statement, given in one of her sermons, that "within Bible pages she had found all the divine Science she preaches" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 169). Further evidence of Mrs. Eddy's firm adherence to Bible doctrine is to be found in the following facts:

She wrote the first tenet of her church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, as follows: "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life" (Manual of The Mother Church, p. 15).
