A Great Life-Purpose

Every genuine Christian Scientist is certain that Christian Science has endowed him with a great life-purpose. It may be that he pursues it somewhat unworthily at times, for he is not always as obedient to the teachings of Christian Science as he ought to be; still, that life-purpose remains with him, a strong, steadying influence. And it is this powerful influence because it is based on accurate spiritual understanding—understanding, that is, of God, the divine Principle of all true being. Nothing can undermine the faith in divine Principle of the Christian Scientist who, in some measure, has proved Principle's presence and power over the trials incidental to mortal existence.

Mrs. Eddy states the life-purpose of the Christian Scientist in a sentence on page 160 of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," which reads, "To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science." Obviously, before one can keep his thought constantly related to the divine he must be acquainted with God, with God's creation, and with God's law. And this is what the study of Christian Science enables its students to do.

Consider the truth which Christian Science imparts. This Science informs us that God is ever present and omnipotent Principle; that He is infinite Mind or Spirit; that He is infinite Life and Love; that He is infinite good. It tells us that God's creation is the expression, image, or reflection of Himself, and that it is therefore spiritual. it unfolds to us the truth that man as the spiritual image of God is perfect, even as God, his creator, is perfect. It acquaints us with the fact that since God is infinite Spirit, what mortals call matter has no real existence, or, in other words, that matter is unreal. These truths are accepted by the Christian Scientist. He treasures them as his most precious possession because he knows that through demonstration of them he is able to overcome the falsities of a material sense of existence, including sin, disease, and sorrow, and that ultimately he will achieve complete mastery over all materiality.
