Twenty-eight years ago I became interested in Christian Science because of the healing of my sister of a lifelong ailment, simply by reading for the first time "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
It was not physical healing that was my goal, for my health was good; but I wanted to know the truth and to gain a philosophy of life. So I read Mrs. Eddy's writings, had help for minor physical troubles and sometimes helped myself; and after serving my connection with an orthodox church I joined The Mother Church and a branch church.
But I sometimes felt that I lacked an entirely satisfying experience of healing. The opportunity for this came when I became very ill while away from home and Christian Science practitioners. Because of the fear of those about me that it might be a contagious disease, I had a medical diagnosis and was told that I had gastritis. I went home as soon as possible and had Christian Science treatment, but did very little to assist the practitioner by my own efforts. For weeks I seemed to get no help and became very weak and extremely emaciated. Finally, a third practitioner, to whom I had just appealed for help, impressed me with the necessity of changing my own thought by reading and working mentally. Early that evening I was attacked by a sense of nausea from which I suffered intermittently. I decided to make a supreme effort to overcome it myself, and with this in thought I tried as never before to realize the truth in "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of Science and Health, especially the sentence, "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." In about half an hour I had so succeeded in detaching consciousness from matter that ease came, the sickness faded away, and I went to sleep and slept soundly all night. I shall never forget the joy that filled me when I awoke in the morning—I felt so well and so spiritually uplifted. I knew the joy and gratitude which come with a decisive spiritual victory. My complete healing from that time went on very rapidly. I recovered my strength, and in a few weeks was able to go anywhere. After several months I looked and felt better than ever. I have never had a return of this trouble in the nineteen years that have followed.
