Good Alone Is Real

"And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." These inspired words are to be found in the thirty-first verse of the first chapter of Genesis. An extraordinary thing is that the second chapter of Genesis entirely contradicts their meaning, for therein is recorded what purports to be an account of an imperfect material creation, accompanied by evil and death. Men, throughout the centuries, have tried to reconcile the two records, but have never succeeded; and for the simple reason that reconciliation is impossible. The ages had to wait for Christian Science to give the explanation.

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, after many years of earnest study and research, discovered that God, the divine Principle of real being, is infinite good; and she drew the conclusion therefrom that good alone is real. She writes on page 525 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Everything good or worthy, God made. Whatever is valueless or baneful, He did not make,—hence its unreality. In the Science of Genesis we read that He saw everything which He had made, 'and, behold, it was very good.'" Thus, Christian Science teaches what the first chapter of Genesis undoubtedly seeks to convey, namely, the truth that good alone is real. Indeed, a few lines farther on our Leader writes, "Sin, sickness, and death must be deemed as devoid of reality as they are of good, God."

Now, whether men think so or not, the fact is that a new era of understanding has been entered upon. Things will never be the same again in the religious realm. A dense mythical cloud has been dispersed, and a clearer light now shines than ever shone before upon true existence. For the revelation has come that since God is infinite good and evil in consequence unreal, every experience of mankind that is not good is naught but erroneous belief. The revelation is so great as oftentimes to be startling to the one who hears of it for the first time. But there it is. And thanks be to God that it has come to the children of men.
