Age

In the review of a book "The Real H. P. Blavatsky" in your issue of the 2nd inst., Madame Blavatsky is referred to as an "uncouth, stormy, and unconventional person, an extraordinary blend of Queen Elizabeth, Mrs. Eddy, and Madame Guyon." The unhappy choice of Mrs. Eddy's name, used in a comparative sense, may lead your readers to conclude that the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science exhibited the mental qualities quoted above. It may also convey the thought that the teachings of Christian Science have something in common with the abstract teachings of the Orient; which is not the case. I would, therefore, request space to enlighten your readers on these two points.

Those who had the privilege of close association with Mrs. Eddy speak of her as a gentlewoman with a gracious manner and a heart overflowing with love for mankind. Her consecrated life was one of constant sacrifice for others. It is not easy to be the pioneer of any movement; but to be the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and to present to the world such a remarkable book as "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," demanded great conviction, wisdom, and courage. The founding of the Christian Science church, with all its activities, was also the work of Mrs. Eddy; and, as Rev. Edward T. Vernon, of London, has said: "No just person can fail to admire her as a religious leader. She has founded a great church and, let us say it frankly, brought great blessings on countless lives." At the age of eighty-seven Mrs. Eddy founded a great daily international newspaper, The Christian Science Monitor.

"Uncouth, stormy, and unconventional" thinking did not bring to humanity such blessings as are to-day being experienced in all corners of the globe through Christian Science. Righteous thinking alone is capable of receiving such a revelation. Theosophy and occultism have no place in Christian Science, whose followers are busily engaged in purifying their thinking, so that they may reflect the Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." In this spiritualization of thought material theories are valueless.
