Oneness

All students of Christian Science are daily learning to know more of the great truth of God's oneness and allness. In thus freeing themselves from false material concepts, many are discovering that there is in reality no life apart from God, good. The First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," should be deeply pondered, for we are constantly called upon to prove the truth of God's oneness; and our understanding of and obedience to this commandment will act as a shield against the arrows of false material thinking.

Once the writer had the opportunity to prove that God, good, is everywhere present, when he was overcome with a great sense of fear, believing that an automobile trip would be too strenuous for him to undertake, since he was at that time only beginning the study of Christian Science and was still much concerned about his health. He started out but the farther he separated himself from his home the more he felt he had undertaken a foolish task. He drove on, however, striving to rise above all fear. Suddenly, the light penetrated his darkened sense, and he realized that God is everywhere present. Upon the realization of this truth, all fear lifted, and he began to see God's goodness reflected in the loveliness of the surrounding country, which he had previously failed to enjoy. He finished the journey joyously, realizing that one needs only to recognize and acknowledge God's ever-presence in order to receive immediate aid.

As we progress, we learn to think of God as all Life, all Truth, all Love. Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 319, 320), "A misplaced word changes the sense and misstates the Science of the Scriptures, as, for instance, to name Love as merely an attribute of God; but we can by special and proper capitalization speak of the love of Love, meaning by that what the beloved disciple meant in one of his epistles, when he said, 'God is love.'"
