Remaining True to Our Ideals

To one who has been granted the privilege of membership in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, there comes the responsibility of upholding the ideals for which the Christian Science organization stands, as expressed in the Manual of The Mother Church and other works by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. One can best perform this duty by being true to his highest sense of right on every occasion. Resisting the temptation to rely on persons for advice or instruction, doing his individual work on every church problem, and to the best of his ability applying his understanding of divine Principle to these problems, he finds each forward step unfolding before him.

With her usual vision our Leader provided for a democratic form of government in the branch churches. A dictionary defines democracy as that form of government in which the sovereignty of the state is vested in and exercised by the people.

This puts the problem of selecting officers to fill the church positions squarely before each individual member. The question is one which calls for much wisdom and unselfed love; and as it is important that those best fitted to fill each office be selected, none can afford to shirk this important duty or neglect to do preparatory work regarding church elections. Thinking along this line and striving to clarify thought in preparation for an annual business meeting, the writer was led to study the account given in I Samuel of the anointing of David to be king over Israel.
