Joyfulness

In studying the writings on Christian Science by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, it is impossible for one not to be impressed by the frequency with which the word "joy" occurs in them, and also by its use in conjunction with the words "power" and "strength."

The power of joy was brought home in a most helpful and practical manner to a young student of Christian Science when trying to help a friend who was suffering from the effects of a severe accident and had been placed in a large hospital. Though she worked as faithfully as she knew how, and endeavored to destroy each argument of error as it presented itself, something seemed lacking. A dull lifelessness claimed to deaden all her work, and she felt that the false mental picture had not been destroyed or the healing accomplished. As she was pondering what she should do to remedy this condition, she observed a puppy, which, upon hearing his master's whistle from the end of the garden, sped down the path uttering short yaps of joy and hurled itself against its beloved master, in its desire to express its affection for him.

This spontaneous expression of joyfulness gave the student just the help she needed. Simple though it was, to her it came as one of God's messages which unfolded like the beautiful petals of a flower. It showed her that joy was the quality which her work lacked, and that her treatment, to accomplish its purpose, must be joyous; for joy, because of its spiritual nature, must always radiate its vitality, dispelling the mists of sorrow, sickness, and sin.
